A new update has hit the camera app of Essential Phone. This update will be coming as version 0.1.096.003, which will be introducing a lot of changes in which the auto-HDR mode will be included.

With regard to the other improvements, the list actually includes dynamic HDR and Flash indicators, new HDR algorithm (for enhanced capture speed, performance as well as scene rendering) and a few fixes concerning stability.
