Nowadays, smartphones are being utilized for many interesting reasons. It is not just the basic use that is important but the various amazing features has popped out to make our lives more comfortable. A report by Phys.org has revealed that University of California has successfully built portable pollution sensors that can estimate the air quality on their smartphones.
The system which is named CitiSens, is the first air quality monitoring system that can deliver real time data for phones and computers.With the help of 100 of the sensors disseminated over considerable area, wecan produce “a wealth of data” regarding ozone, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide within the air we breathe. These are the major pollutants present and emitted by Vehicles. While studying a research of the Wireless Health 2012 conference in San Diego, pollution largely resides in hot spots, along main roads and at intersections. The report has also revealed, unfortunately, “the people who are doing the most to reduce emissions, by biking or taking the bus, were the people who experienced the highest levels of exposure to pollutants.”
Also it is not the location that matters but also the time of the day. Professor Charles Elkan experienced low ratings when he drove in mid-morning for work and witnessed high figures when hecame back in the afternoon. Elkanadded that CitiSense sensors will be deployed into smartphones one day, letting everyone to measure the pollution level immediately.
The project is specifically carried out to deploy a wireless network where hundreds of small environmental sensors will be handed over to the public. Information from the central computers of analysis will be delivered to individuals, public health agencies and the community at large. Each sensor cost $1,000 per unit, but mass-production can make it more affordable.
