Wireless charging still calls for an aftermarket solution. However, BMW will offer its own setup with the 5 Series in 2018.The 2018 BMW 530e plug-in hybrid will be able to wirelessly charge its battery with the help of a BMW-branded induction pad. It can be installed in the open or under cover and when you connect it to the power, the 530e will place itself over the pad conductinga current wirelessly from pad to vehicle.

It’s a smart system for sure but there are still few questions that might make you raise your eyebrows. It will not hit the market until next year. BMW has not also verified if it will be available in the US, or Europe alone. In addition, we have no idea about the price and if the charging pad must be purchased individually of any vehicle option that enables wireless charging.

While BMW’s wireless charging system is going to be out there at the right point in time, Mercedes-Benz, the main competitor, plans to come up with its own wireless charging solution for a plug-in hybrid variant of the S-Class flagship sedan next year as well.
