The top court of European Union has today ruled that the famous ride-sharing platform Uber is not a digital service, but it is a transport service, which must be controlled and regulated just like other taxi companies and operators are regulated. Uber, on the other hand, has still reiterated its stance that it is only a digital service and hence it should be liable to pay lower amount of taxes just like the other e-commerce businesses around the world.
Uber was basically launched back in 2011 and it is currently in operation in more than 600 cities around the world. In EU alone, the company is active in more than 60 cities. Since the company is active in major cities and regions of Europe, hence the ruling of European Court of Justice is quite significant in the aspect that the services provided by Uber are covered by the services in the transportation field and hence the EU member states should also treat it as such.
